Languages Other Than English (Italian)

Languages enables all students to communicate proficiently in a language other than English by providing students with essential skills in that language, an intercultural capability, and an understanding of the role of language and culture in human communication. Language learning broadens students’ horizons to include the personal, social, and employment opportunities that an increasingly interconnected and interdependent world presents.

At Aranmore Catholic Primary School, students from Pre-Primary to Year Six participate in a 50-minute Italian lesson with a specialist teacher each week. They learn through rich and challenging experiences and enjoy role-playing, singing, poems and games.

Performance Arts

Dance is expressive movement with purpose and form. Through Dance, students represent, question and celebrate human experience, using movement as the medium for personal, social, emotional, physical and cultural communication. Active participation as dancers, choreographers and audiences promotes wellbeing and social inclusion. Learning in and through Dance enhances students’ knowledge and understanding of diverse cultures and contexts and develops their personal, social and cultural identity.

Dance at Aranmore Catholic Primary School consists of one 50-minute lesson per week during Semester One for Pre-Primary to Year Six. This is led by a specialist teacher and culminates in a ‘Dance Showcase’ performance.

Music exists distinctively in every culture and is a basic expression of human experience. Students’ active participation in music, individually and collaboratively, draws on their own traditions and life experiences. These experiences help them to appreciate and meaningfully engage with music practices and traditions of other times, places, cultures and contexts. Studying music stimulates imaginative and innovative responses, critical thinking and aesthetic understanding, and encourages students to reach their creative and expressive potential.

At Aranmore Catholic Primary School, Music is led by a specialist teacher and consists of one 50-minute class music lesson per week for students from Pre-Primary to Year Six. Students also participate in a weekly session of Liturgical Singing where they practise songs relevant to special events and liturgical seasons. Children in Kindy participate in a weekly ‘Music and Movement’ session facilitated by the specialist teacher.

Physical Education

In Physical Education students learn through movement in a range of settings. They experience fundamental movement skills through structured movement activities and exploration of their environment. This establishes an awareness of body movements and their movement abilities. Physical Education equips children with skills for active participation in sports and supports them to make informed decisions to enhance their wellbeing.

At Aranmore Catholic Primary School, Physical Education is taught by a specialist teacher from Pre-Primary to Year Six. Students participate in two 50-minute lessons every week where they practice skills and improve strength and coordination. In the second weekly lesson they put these skills, techniques and strategies to use in purposeful tasks and games.

Swimming Lessons

Every student in Pre-Primary to Year Six is given the opportunity to participate in two weeks of swimming lessons delivered by specialist instructors through State Swim at Beatty Park.

The Science content includes the three strands of Science Understanding, Science as a Human Endeavour and Science Inquiry Skills. The three strands of the curriculum are interrelated and their content is taught in an integrated way. Each year, students explore biological, chemical, earth and space and physical sciences. All learning experiences promote critical thinking as students are encouraged to recognise the role of Science in society and its everyday applications.

At Aranmore Catholic Primary School, Science is taught by a specialist teacher. Students from Pre-Primary to Year Six participate in a 50-minute lesson every week where they enjoy hands-on activities and practical experiences of Science in the world around them.
